Every December when I go to India, there is always a movie that creates a anxiety amongst my friends/family members. Last year was Gajani, which I would say was a disaster considering the direction, the editing and a complete failure to copy Memento. I know, I know all you Amir Khan fans are going to say it’s not a copy, but it certainly seems inspired from the Hollywood movie, and Bollywood sure did fail at picking up that ‘inspiration’. Anyways, so this year it was yet another Amir Khan movie, 3 Idiots. OK hold your horses, don’t stop reading this blog, I have to say I liked it too.
Very well directed with a good story line, keeping the anxiety level high to figure out what happens to Amir Khan, a good topic handled well, with a very good entertainment value. But, unfortunately the wrong aspect get emphasized and masticated to finally blame the system/parents.
I myself am a mechanical engineer. Luckily my parents never forced me towards any profession, and mechanical engineering has always been my preferred choice and my parents always supported it. But what if I didn’t know what I wanted to do and my parents would not have forced me, where would I be now.
I agree that the parents should not be forcing on their kid what they always wanted to be or wanted to do. I am strictly against that! If the kid/student (15-16 years old) shows a genuine interest in something, the parents should dig into it and see how serious he/she is in pursing that. But for the rest, who have no clue as to what they want to do, can their destiny be left solely to them? Does the average 15-16 year old has the maturity and the intellect to think what they want to do in life?
Most of us did come from the old system, where the parents almost persuaded us into some professional line, but considering our personal success, was that a bad move on our parent’s behalf?
What we need to understand is the movie talks about only a certain percentage of the sample size. I am sure that this movie is going to inspire many students to leave the education line that they are currently pursuing and do something that they wanted to do, and I really hope that they succeed. For some with weak hearts, this movie may give them idea to end their lives; for others this movie may just increase the frustration they already suffer, yet find not enough guts to stand up for themselves. This may lead to ending their lives (quite contrary to movie’s theme).
Broadly the movie does state the need to change the system, but the fine line between forceful learning to wishful was hard to maintain. The change in the system does not guarantee that the decisions of teenagers (especially of current Roadies age) will lead to their wished path. Let’s hope that in the end we don’t fool ourselves too much with ‘Aaal Iz Well’.

3 Idiots is a good entertainer. But we will be idiots if we take it at face value.
The director seems to say, “go ahead, be anti-establishment. I won’t say it openly because I am shit scared.” Plus, the question remains that how do you define happiness and success. After all the rhetoric, the ‘successful’ Rancho does make it big after selling his patents to the ‘unsuccessful’ Ramalingam, right?
If the movie inspires some youth to become REAL, I would be happy.
